Annoyingly, I couldn't figure out how to put a background in.

I think I’m not the only one who wouldn’t have noticed the “no background” if you hadn’t mentioned it!
The foreground really carries these panels. I just assumed that at this Intermediatish focal-range the gross details of the background were too large to fit in the frame, and the fine details were too small to see.

I would not have noticed the absence of background, if you had not mentioned it. The page is about close-up conversations, so background might be nice, but is not necessary for your story.

I should stress that I always like your backgrounds, of course.

I realise you have a certain artistic style, which is why I have followed you for years. If you are uncomfortable with white backing, try silhouette as in panel 6

WTF are you talking about?

The characters didn't stay in one place. The viewpoint moved. The lighting was different where they moved to.

It's subtle for the last two frames. Some shading is a li'l obscured by the bubble. The background is there. You just don't understand it.

field of view shifted in tight to the characters...
you can see the buildings in the background but they're out of focus
looks good and proper to me

That's it.

Guin was walking towards Tia. Tia turned as Guin approached. The viewpoint shifted in closer and turned a bit as Guin got closer to Tia.

For some reason, it never occurred to me that boob armor wouldn't be an integrated part of whatever leathers a person was wearing.
As for reduced background, it is standard practice to deliberately leave out extra detail once the scene starts getting more involved. We thought you did it on purpose!

Have you ever thought about digitally modeling the area around each scene, particularly if they're going to be spending a lot of time in a place? I've seen other artists use it to good effect.

There's lots of reasons to not do that.
1) Takes forever
2) None of the stuff I want in the backgrounds is freely available to put in a scene, so I'd have to manually model everything
3) Takes forever
4) I'd have to trace over it, because it wouldn't look right as a render, in which case I could just draw it
5) Takes forever
6) Having detailed backgrounds makes the cells go blurph blurph blurph instead of rolling nicely. Detailed backgrounds are a "sometimes" food.

Not all things need details in the backround, this scene works so well with the blurred backdrop as it has no effect on the story on this page due to the close up interactions.

View has it right in this case to skip the super pretty backdrop for this cause it fits so well.
