If racism has a rational reason is it still racism?

Yes. Anything can be rationalized.

Rationality != rationalization. You can be "racists" towards dogs for of good reasons because some dog races really are smarter than others. This has nothing inherently to do with rationalizing.

Well, there's still a difference in degree. It's difficult to train a chihuahua to play well with children. They tend to be skittish and hyper and they're not very obedient. That doesn't mean you CAN'T train one to be a nurse dog, just that you could train half a dozen pit bulls with the same amount of time and effort.

To say that the riverfolk are at risk of "falling" and thus make poor governors is one thing. To say that they CAN'T do it is another.

It depends, she may be saying can't in that it is not allowed rather than they don't have the ability.

I'm thinking this is less about racism, and a whole lot more about "Lets not have a Demon rule over us, mkay?!"

Seeing as how IRL mushroom farms are often in old mines, and they’ve got valuable magic mushrooms (not the drug kind... probably) growing in their sewers and abandoned mines, I’m at a loss for how they can improve the city’s fortunes

Well, the mushrooms have already been harvested .. by Lilly. 😁

The question then becomes, can Ozoal fall ?

Nice catch, I had forgotten about that … welp, the solution is obvious then - Ozoal rules !

… what, riverfolk doesn't like that ?
Feed them to the squid ! 🤣

That might work. What I wonder is how the other dragonkibd will react. Creating new dragonkind seems to be an expensive business and it might make them feel threatened. But if the church has the power to back this up and Ribatta can convince the higher ups to do so maybe it could work

Hmm if it's the few Church rules still enforced, then I wonder how easy it is for any Riverfolk, or individual of other fallable races to fall, and how often it actually happens, we've seen two instances so far with the Smith and the Ant Queen.

I love exposition pages, so much lore, yay.

I do too. I love swimming in the deepest lore, so later I stand a halfway decent chance of remembering a useful fraction of it.

I would suspect that the higher your standing, the higher the pressure, and thus the higher the temptation to "fall".

.. just … don't fall down the stairs, they hurt !

Since it is Rinatta saying it as a representative of the church, the statement may be more a matter of belief than reasoning.

Considering that there have already been three fallen in the comic, I think that the Church has this one down pat, with proper evidence 'n' everything !

"Only the infallible may govern cities"

So, anarchy then.
